It promotes equal opportunities for men and women in rural areas and works so that women take an active role in decision-making within farms and in agricultural representative bodies. ASAJA Mujeres works as a network within ASAJA, with representation in different regions of Spain and a national coordination team that drives training, leadership and rural female entrepreneurship programs.
Expertise and experience focused on the rural world
ASAJA Mujeres has a strong experience in four topics, central to Grapes of Change:
- Gender equality in rural areas
- We encourage active participation of women in agriculture, livestock farming and farm management.
- We run training programs on women’s leadership, rural entrepreneurship and economic empowerment.
- We work with public administrations to design equality plans and applyLey de Titularidad Compartida (the Shared Ownership Law), which recognises women’s work in family farms.
- Non-discrimination and inclusion
- We fight the gender gap in agricultural employment and support equal access to resources, training and representative roles.
- We run awareness campaigns that highlight the key role of rural women in sustainable development and agricultural innovation.
- Harassment and gender-based violence prevention
- We deliver training sessions and workshops on preventing sexual and workplace harassment in rural settings.
- We collaborate with institutions and specialised organisations to share response protocols and support affected women.
- Occupational safety with a gender perspective
- We promote training on health and safety in agricultural work, addressing specific risks women face in the field (for example, ergonomics, machinery use, work-life balance, etc.)
ASAJA Mujeres brings a comprehensive understanding of rural life through direct experience with female farmers, livestock breeders and rural entrepreneurs. Its distinctive strengths include:
- Connecting gender equality with sustainable rural economic development.
- Maintaining a territorial presence throughout Spain, which allows them to understand local realities for rural women.
- Offering a practical,close-to-the-ground perspective shaped by daily work in the countryside rather than a purely theoretical or institutional view.
Promoting leadership, economic autonomy and equal opportunities for rural women across Spain.
ASAJA Mujeres developed the program “Mujer Rural, Mujer Emprendedora” in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food of Spain and the European Social Fund. The initiative aimed to promote leadership, economic autonomy and equal opportunities for rural women across Spain.
Among the activities, ASAJA Mujeres developped:
- Workshops on entrepreneurship, digitalisation, marketing and business management tailored to the agricultural sector.
- Awareness sessions on gender equality, co-responsibility and work-family balance.
- Training on rural occupational safety, including safe agricultural machinery use, ergonomics and risk prevention.
- Personalised mentoring to support women who want to create or modernise their farms.
As a result, more than 1,000 rural women received training in different regions. New agri-food initiatives led by women began to grow, many of them in areas at risk of depopulation.·And finally, women increased their presence in ASAJA’s agricultural representative bodies.
This project narrowed the gender gap in rural areas and strengthened the safety and economic autonomy of female farmers, which created a fairer, inclusive and sustainable environment.
Grapes of Change, a commitment to equality, inclusion and sustainability in the wine sector
We joined Grapes of Change because we share its commitment to equality, inclusion and sustainability in the wine sector. The project inspires us through its focus on empowering women and promoting responsible practices in rural areas, values that our association has defended for years. Grapes of Change matters to us because it links innovation with equity and helps create a future where rural women have real opportunities, leadership and a strong voice.
We want to see vineyards and wineries where gender equality shapes everyday life and where violence, harassment and any form of discrimination have no place. We want women to enjoy the same opportunities for leadership, professional growth and recognition as men, and we want workplaces that act inclusively, safely and respectfully. We envision a wine industry that values diversity, promotes co-responsibility and ensures that everyone can work with dignity and confidence.
