Prevention and response to gender-based and sexual violence in public festive events: Awareness and victim support at the Colmar wine fair.

Scalability

★★★★★

Description

This initiative introduces prevention and support measures against gender-based and sexual violence at the Foire aux Vins de Colmar, a large public event combining cultural and commercial activities. For the first time, specialised associations were invited to set up information stands and conduct outreach activities directly within the event space. Their role is to raise awareness among visitors about risks of sexual harassment and violence in festive environments, including issues such as drink spiking, inappropriate behaviour, and sexual assault.

The associations also provide practical tools and resources, such as prevention materials and guidance on protective behaviours, while promoting respectful interactions and consent. In addition to awareness-raising, they ensure immediate support for potential victims by offering listening services, guidance, and referral to appropriate support structures.

Why this matters for Grapes of Change

This initiative represents a valuable practice for Grapes of Change as it shows how GBV prevention can be extended beyond traditional workplaces into wine-related cultural and public environments. It demonstrates the importance of addressing gender-based and sexual violence in spaces connected to the wine sector’s wider ecosystem, including festivals and tourism events.

The initiative contributes to women’s empowerment by improving access to information, protection tools, and on-site support services, helping create safer conditions for participation in public life. Its multi-actor approach, involving public authorities, civil society organisations, and event organisers, highlights the value of coordinated prevention and response mechanisms. Although not directly located within wine production, it offers strong potential for replication in wine tourism and sector-related events, reinforcing cultural change and awareness within communities linked to the wine sector.

Lessons learned

This initiative shows that embedding GBV prevention actions within large public and wine-related events can significantly expand outreach beyond traditional institutional settings. The presence of specialised associations on-site increases visibility, accessibility, and trust in support services, making it easier for victims or witnesses to seek help.

The added value of this initiative lies in the multi-actor collaboration between public authorities, civil society organisations, and event organisers, which strengthens coordination and ensures a more comprehensive response to gender-based and sexual violence risks.

At the same time, the initiative highlights certain limitations, particularly the difficulty of reaching all individuals in a crowded and fast-paced environment, and the fact that some victims may still be reluctant to report or access support services during or after incidents.
