A beer against violence: when an agricultural supply chain becomes a tool for change

A beer can be much more than a simple drink. It can become a message, a choice, a concrete gesture of collective responsibility.

From this vision comes Libeera, the first Italian beer produced through an entirely female agricultural supply chain, created through a memorandum of understanding between Coldiretti, the main Italian agricultural organization and partner in Grapes of Change, and Una Nessuna Centomila, a foundation working nationwide to combat violence against women.

The name Libeera itself expresses the deeper meaning of the project: it recalls the Italian word “libera” (free), a symbol of emancipation and self-determination, while at the same time playing with the English word “beer”. A wordplay that becomes a statement of intent: a beer that speaks about freedom, dignity and the future.

Around this alliance, a broad and collective supply chain has taken shape. Supporting the initiative is the Consorzio Birra Italiana, which promotes the use of barley and hops grown in Italy by involving farmers, malt houses and independent breweries; Filiera Agricola Italiana, which ensures transparency and traceability of raw materials throughout the entire production chain; and Campagna Amica, Coldiretti’s foundation that promotes Italian agriculture, short supply chains and the direct relationship between producers and consumers.

Libeera is therefore not just a product: it is a social project that brings together agriculture, industry, distribution and culture to address gender-based violence through concrete actions. Each bottle sold directly supports women who are survivors of violence: €0.20 per bottle is donated to the Una Nessuna Centomila Foundation to fund anti-violence centers and programs for protection, independence and reintegration into work.

This commitment is also visible on the label: every bottle displays the national anti-violence and stalking helpline 1522, along with a clear message about the initiative’s purpose. The goal is to turn an everyday act into a conscious choice, reminding consumers that even a simple purchase can become an act of social responsibility.

At its heart, the project is a supply chain that speaks about women at every stage: from growing the ingredients, to production, from communication to distribution. It is a model that shows how the fight against gender-based violence also passes through economic opportunity, decent work and the recognition of women’s value in production systems. At the same time, Libeera helps build a new narrative of women: not only as victims, but as protagonists of change, innovation and sustainable development.

Libeera proves that even an everyday product can carry deep values. It is an invitation to shared responsibility: to choose consciously, support ethical projects and build alliances across sectors for a common goal. This initiative shows that the fight against gender-based violence is not waged only with words, but also through business choices, inclusive economic models and networks that turn the market into a driver of change.
